BF Plastic US Figures (test pieces)

"Bad figures" some have opined: it's why I don't rate opinions by non-painters on figure quality very highly. Don't know how I managed really...

While the new(-ish) BF hard plastic infantry have their drawbacks, they also have many positive features: the lack of BF's usual shoddy metal castings is a big plus.

In other news: thanks to Photobucket severing picture links, several old painting tutorials were rendered useless...thanks PB, though you're not getting a cent from me. My thanks to Braxen for letting me know, I had completely forgotten some were hosted elsewhere back in the day. Despite looking a little dated I've uploaded the pics again for anyone who might find them useful. They should be all be fixed now; if you spot any problems, let me know.

Also: ABS plastic. I mean...really Battlefront? Really?

More updates soon.

  1. Stunning work as always CDT, however your skills could make any model look amazing. What is ABS plastic??? I've never painted plastic infantry, but find the PSC and BF plastic tanks to be of good plastic... Zvezda not so much

    1. Thanks Matt, though it's not entirely true. Bad figure are bad figures, and good painters will avoid wasting their time trying to make them look good when the same amount of time and effort could be better spent on good figures for much better results.

      ABS is BF's "flexible" plastic, e.g.: http://www.flamesofwar.com/hobby.aspx?art_id=5615

Initial offerings have been pretty poor: BF claims they will get better, but why release a sub-standard product in the first place?

Agree on the BF and PSC hard plastic: Zvezda has some poor kits (though they are usually inexpensive) but also some great ones, particularly the newer releases (e.g. the King Tiger is pretty damn good for the money).

  2. Gorgeous! Your style is so pleasing to the eye - I re-examine my own after oogling yours!

    But does the paint stick?!

    1. Thanks Troy.

I'm using Vallejo Polyurethane undercoat through an airbrush, works well, no problems with paint adhesion etc. Also, I varnish afterwards: MiG satin/gloss followed by Vallejo Premium Matt polyurethane (062)...the gloss is not for strength, I just find the Matt "matts down" better over a gloss or satin coat for some reason, whereas applied directly over the paint it often dries with a slight sheen. Also, I give the undercoat and varnishes 24hrs to dry before proceeding: slow, but I'm slow anyway.

MiG has two new matt varnishes ("lucky varnish" Matt and Ultra Matt): I need to get some and test sometime.

  4. Beautiful! Sorry to necro this thread, but would you be willing to share the paint recipes you used for the jacket and webbing? My jackets are turning out either too greenish or too brown, and I love the drab color you got for the webbing. TIA!

    1. Webbing is (shadow) VMC 887 Brown Violet, block-paint Panzer Aces 318 US Tankcrew, then add Panzer Aces 322 highlight US tank crew to the 318, then a lot more for edge highlights.

M41 Jacket is 887 Brown Violet for shadow, 988 Khaki block-paint, then add some 318 US Tankcrew to the Khaki for a highlight (about 30-40%), then add white to that mix for edge highlights.

    2. Ahh, I thought the shadow color was darker than 887 Brown Violet. Thank you for sharing!
